Johannesburg – Fireflies and Ashes is committed to highlighting emerging talents, and today we shine a spotlight on the remarkable work of Percy Maimela.
A wholly self-taught artist, Maimela has carved out a unique place in contemporary African art, using unconventional materials such as charcoal, salt, sand, maize meal, and ground coffee.
In 2019, his innovative methods earned him a Guinness World Record for creating the largest coffee mosaic ever, a record that remains unbeaten.
At the heart of Maimela’s exhibition is his ongoing “Little Princess” series, which he began in 2014.
As time has progressed, the “Little Princess” has transformed with Maimela, becoming a universal symbol through which he explores themes of resilience, identity, hope, and the pivotal choices that shape our journeys.
Her distinctive mask, embellished with textures reminiscent of fingerprints, represents our DNA, shared heritage, and humanity, while its sleek design embodies the courage to move forward.
The dice remind us that every significant journey comes with risks, and the teddy bear signifies the comfort of familiarity.
These recurring symbols encourage each viewer to find their personal story within the artwork.
