Xanti Pupuma, the head coach of Milford FC, has expressed his views on the lack of foreign players in the team’s current roster. He emphasized the club’s commitment to nurturing local talent, though this strategy may change in the future.
In their debut match of the Betway Premiership, the newly promoted team displayed a lineup largely composed of South African players, suffering a 2-0 loss to the reigning champions, Orlando Pirates, on Saturday.
Pupuma noted that it’s rare for clubs moving up from the Motsepe Foundation Championship to include international players in their squads.
“We are a team that has moved up from the Motsepe Foundation Championship,” said Pupuma, who originates from Nqamakwe in the Eastern Cape.
“Typically, there aren’t many foreign players in that league, so we retained those players as we transitioned into the PSL.”
Pupuma acknowledged that the team has not yet looked beyond the local market for player acquisitions.
“We haven’t had the chance to explore options outside,” he noted.
“Luckily, we have spotted local players to bolster our squad. We signed individuals who can address key areas, such as the Nomandelas and the Mnqobis.
“Unfortunately, we haven’t pinpointed any foreign players. Although agents and club owners have made suggestions, our focus remains on providing local talent from Richards Bay the opportunity to thrive.
“Given our origins in the Eastern Cape, we aim to integrate players from this region into our team-building process. Thus, if a player from Nqamakwe matches the skill of a player from Zimbabwe, I’ll opt for the one from Nqamakwe.”
“I have no objection to foreign players; however, my connection to a local player from Nqamakwe is more profound because I comprehend his background.
“As we progress in the professional realm, this perspective may shift. As the club evolves, our viewpoint will likely broaden over time.”
While Milford currently prioritizes the development of local talent, Pupuma suggested that the recruitment strategy could adapt as the club strengthens its foothold in the Betway Premiership.
