Casablanca – Striker Thembi Kgatlana of Banyana Banyana scored the winning goal against Burkina Faso on Tuesday night in Casablanca, Morocco, securing South Africa’s place in the 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON).
Kgatlana found the back of the net in the 21st minute, igniting hopes of moving on to the next round from second position in Group B.
This goal elevated South Africa from fourth to second place, and following that early strike, Banyana Banyana demonstrated solid defensive skills.
The second half was centered around game management and maintaining a clean sheet for Banyana throughout the full 90 minutes.
However, there were some anxious moments during the seven minutes of stoppage time.
In the end, Kgatlana’s goal was enough for the team to advance to the WAFCON knockout stage.
In another match in Group B, Ivory Coast defeated Tanzania 2-1, securing the top position in the group.
Consequently, Tanzania and Burkina Faso are heading home.
Meanwhile, the South African government has commended Banyana Banyana for their “impressive victory over Burkina Faso.”
“The team represented South Africa’s dignity and pride,” stated a late-night announcement from the Government Communication and Information System (GCIS).
“Throughout the tournament, the squad exhibited the discipline and perseverance that define South African sports.”
The GCIS added: “We thank the players, technical team, support staff, and all South Africans who rallied behind Banyana Banyana during the tournament.”
“Banyana Banyana’s advancement to the next round of WAFCON 2026 marks another proud chapter in South Africa’s sporting legacy.”
