Polokwane – Law enforcement officials in Limpopo have detained three suspects and recovered two stolen vehicles: a Nissan Navara ProMax and a grey Nissan Navara, thwarting their export from South Africa.
Police spokesperson Colonel Malesela Ledwaba remarked that these arrests and vehicle recoveries are part of intensified initiatives to combat cross-border vehicle smuggling.
The stolen vehicles, collectively valued at R1.5 million, were seized during separate anti-smuggling operations conducted on Sunday, 2 August 2026, and Monday, 3 August 2026.
Colonel Ledwaba elaborated that in the initial incident on Sunday, police received alerts regarding a Nissan Navara ProMax stolen from Springs, Gauteng, on Saturday, 1 August 2026.
This valuable vehicle was tracked as it approached the Beitbridge border, suggesting it was likely destined for smuggling out of the country.
“Officers established surveillance along the N1 South within the Westernburg policing area, where the vehicle was spotted driving at high speed,” Colonel Ledwaba reported.
“The driver ignored police commands to stop, leading to a high-speed pursuit.
“The vehicle was finally halted, and preliminary investigations confirmed it had been reported stolen.”
Two Malawian nationals, aged 36 and 40, have been arrested.
The recovered Nissan Navara ProMax is appraised at around R900,000.
In a subsequent incident on Monday, 3 August 2026, police acted on intelligence concerning another stolen vehicle purportedly en route to the Beitbridge Port of Entry.
“Operational teams monitored the N1 South outside Polokwane, where a grey Nissan Navara was intercepted,” Colonel Ledwaba clarified.
“Investigations verified that this vehicle had been stolen from the Alberton policing area in Gauteng on Friday, 31 July 2026.”
This vehicle holds an approximate value of R600,000.
A 34-year-old South African male was arrested in connection with this event.
All three suspects are scheduled to appear before the Polokwane Magistrate’s Court today, Tuesday, 4 August 2026.
The apprehensions and vehicle recoveries were conducted by the South African Police Service (SAPS) Provincial Tracking Team in collaboration with the Provincial Investigation Unit and outside law enforcement partners, including Limpopo Tactical, Tshimollo Security and Investigations, Shadow Secure, Tracker South Africa, and Tracker Connect.
New Provincial Police Commissioner in Limpopo, Lieutenant General Jan Scheepers, commended the multidisciplinary teams and private security partners for their ongoing cooperation in disrupting cross-border vehicle smuggling activities.
He highlighted that the arrests and recoveries underscore the success of intelligence-led operations, reaffirming SAPS’s dedication to dismantling criminal networks involved in vehicle theft and cross-border smuggling.
