Cape Town – The successful retrieval of Kenya Airways flight (KQ784), which faced a tyre failure during landing and became immobilized on the runway at Cape Town International Airport, has garnered considerable acknowledgment.
This event, which affected several other flights, occurred on Tuesday, 4 August 2026.
“The Air Traffic and Navigation Services (ATNS) wishes to extend its sincere thanks to all personnel and stakeholders involved in the effective management and recovery of operations at Cape Town International Airport,” stated Khulu Phasiwe, ATNS spokesperson, on Wednesday, 5 August 2026.
“Following the tyre burst incident with the Kenya Airways aircraft, Airports Company South Africa (ACSA) swiftly closed the runway, which was successfully reopened before 20:00 on the same day, allowing affected airlines to resume their operations and adjust their schedules.”
ATNS Chairperson Adv. Zola Majavu expressed appreciation for the Air Traffic Controllers and Air Traffic Flow Specialists who managed traffic flow during the disruption, promoting collaborative decision-making and facilitating the orderly recovery of affected flights in challenging conditions.
Moreover, the Acting Chief Executive Officer of ATNS, Matome Moholola, remarked: “We also recognize the Air Traffic Services Units that effectively handled diverted aircraft and extended their hours of service when required.”
“Your adaptability, professionalism, and support were crucial in safeguarding the wider network and ensuring a successful outcome.”
Moholola continued: “We also express gratitude to the Central Airspace Management Unit, ACSA, the airlines, airport operational teams, the Aeronautical Information Management Unit, the Aeronautical Rescue Coordination Centre, and the Operations Management team for their leadership and teamwork in executing a successful and highly visible recovery operation.
“This response highlighted the significance of collaboration, coordinated decision-making, and operational commitment.”
Spokesperson Phasiwe noted that ATNS values the numerous messages of support and commendation regarding the professional and efficient handling of flight landings and departures, even under challenging operational conditions.
