Murmansk – A prestigious send-off event for the international Icebreaker of Knowledge expedition occurred in Murmansk.
Captain Ruslan Sasov of the nuclear-powered icebreaker 50 Let Pobedy commanded the departure, initiating the vessel’s journey from Murmansk to the North Pole, via Franz Josef Land, before returning to Murmansk.
The expedition will last a total of 10 days.
During the journey, participants will explore the natural wonders of the Far North, observe the operations of a nuclear-powered icebreaker, and learn about the role of nuclear technology in advancing Arctic shipping.
Students will carry their national flags to the North Pole, enhancing the significance of reaching the 90° mark.
More than just a voyage, this expedition provides students globally with a unique opportunity to experience the Arctic firsthand and join an international community of young researchers dedicated to science, technology, and the future.

Onboard the nuclear-powered vessel 50 Let Pobedy, these students will encounter technologies not found elsewhere.
“We aim to harness the brilliance of young minds to drive science forward and protect our planet. This passion fuels our progress,” highlighted Rosatom Director General Alexey Likhachev.
The selection process for a spot on board unfolded over several months and attracted approximately 5,000 students from 22 countries, including South Africa, Namibia, Rwanda, Tanzania, Egypt, Armenia, Bangladesh, Belarus, Bolivia, Brazil, Hungary, Vietnam, India, Indonesia, Kazakhstan, China, Kyrgyzstan, Mongolia, Myanmar, Serbia, Turkey, and Uzbekistan.
The selection occurred in three phases: a scientific quiz, a series of webinars hosted by nuclear industry experts, and a final round where 10 finalists from each country presented innovative projects themed “How Nuclear Technologies Are Changing the World Today.”
For Ntsako Sithole, the selected finalist from South Africa, this experience is already proving transformative.
Sithole remarked: “To find myself so far from home, surrounded by ice, snow, and polar beauty… Perhaps that’s the essence of opportunities like this. You suddenly realize that the world is much larger than what you’re used to, and you too have a place within it.”
He continued: “I want to fully embrace this expedition: to observe, listen, ask questions, remember every detail, and believe that even the most isolated locations on the map can someday become part of my reality.”
Once aboard, this excitement transitions into an extensive educational program commencing on the very first day.
Participants can look forward to lectures, workshops, discussions, scientific experiments, career guidance, creative activities, and unforgettable symbolic events – from postcards sent from the northernmost post office to a “round-the-world journey” at the convergence of all meridians.
Alongside the scientific curriculum, the voyage features a creative aspect: popular artists, social media influencers, and esteemed Russian science fiction writer Sergey Lukyanenko will be special guests.
During the Arctic expedition, he will conduct a creative workshop for participants, providing a captivating start to a science fiction narrative and inspiring students to craft their own endings.
Post-expedition, the complete collaborative work will be officially published.
South Africa has previously participated in the Icebreaker of Knowledge program – young representatives from the nation have embarked on this Arctic adventure, each bringing a piece of home to the ice and returning with inspiring tales.
Now, Sithole follows in their footsteps, with a unique opportunity to engage closely with STEM disciplines, broaden his perspective, and connect with young researchers from around the globe.
This voyage exemplifies the nation’s growing enthusiasm for nuclear technology and its long-standing partnership with Rosatom – from fuel provision to floating power plants.
For a young man standing at the top of the world, the message is clear: the future of energy is being shaped now, and he is ready to be part of that story.
Leading international experts will accompany the expedition participants aboard the nuclear-powered icebreaker.
Among them are Project Manager at the Laboratory of Genomic Technologies and Tissue Engineering of JSC NIITFA Egor Plakhotnyuk; Deputy Chief Engineer of the Beloyarsk NPP Andrey Smelov; General Director of CONSIST-OS (the IT integrator for Rosatom’s Electric Power Division) Ilya Kholkin; Director of Communications at the Brazilian Association of Nuclear Energy Jairu Silva Bastos; physician, science communicator, and Mwanachuo Family Foundation of Tanzania expert Dr. Noel Rajabu Mabele; and Professor at the Department of Marine Biology, Cochin University of Science and Technology in India Dr. Bijoy Nandan.
