Ex-Speaker Mapisa-Nqakula Plans to Seek Discharge in R4.5 Million Corruption Case

Pretoria – The High Court in Pretoria has delayed the corruption trial of former Speaker of Parliament, Nosiviwe Mapisa-Nqakula, following a request from her defense attorneys.

Mapisa-Nqakula is facing 12 counts of corruption and one count of money laundering, allegedly committed during her time as Minister of Defence.

She is charged with receiving approximately R4.5 million from Nombasa Ntsondwa-Ndhlovu, a contractor associated with the Department of Defence.

During the proceedings, the State introduced WhatsApp messages, bank statements, and other documentation to corroborate Ntsondwa-Ndhlovu’s testimony.

On Thursday, 13 August 2026, Henry Mamothame, spokesperson for the Investigating Directorate Against Corruption (IDAC), announced that the State had concluded its case after presenting evidence of cash transactions, luxury home renovations, and financial records linking Mapisa-Nqakula to the alleged kickbacks.

However, the defense requested a postponement to acquire transcribed records of the case in order to file an application under Section 174 of the Criminal Procedure Act.

“The accused has informed the court of her intention to apply for a discharge in this matter,” IDAC spokesperson Mamothame stated.

“With the conclusion of the State’s case, it will now await the defense’s arguments to prepare a response.”

The trial has been rescheduled to 20 August 2026.
