Dr. Mteto Nyati Reassumes Role as Chairperson of Eskom Board for Second Term

Pretoria – The Minister of Electricity and Energy, Dr. Kgosientsho Ramokgopa, has announced the reappointment of Dr. Mteto Nyati as the Chairperson of the Eskom Board.

“Dr. Nyati’s continued leadership provides crucial stability as Eskom shifts from its immediate goal of improving generation performance to the long-term aim of fortifying the utility’s role in South Africa’s dynamic electricity landscape,” Minister Ramokgopa remarked on Friday, September 25, 2026.

“I wish to express my appreciation to Dr. Nyati for his guidance during a tumultuous period for Eskom. The improvements in the utility’s performance reflect the hard work of its Board, management, and staff.

“His ongoing involvement will be vital in carrying this work into the next phase of Eskom, where success will be defined by reliable energy security, a financially sound utility, and improved services for South Africans.”

Minister Ramokgopa underscored that he has articulated the shareholders’ expectations for Eskom 2.0.

The Generation Recovery Plan has positively impacted the performance of the current fleet.

For long-term energy security, Eskom must plan for new generation capacity, expand the grid, strengthen customer relationships, and adjust to the influx of new generators and traders.

The Board is responsible for developing a comprehensive roadmap for Eskom over the next three, five, and ten years.

It needs to clearly define the utility’s public responsibilities, future generation mix, commercial health, and the requisite investments to maintain those elements.

Eskom should accomplish its mission independently, without relying on recurring financial support or continuous double-digit tariff increases as part of its business model.

In accordance with the Integrated Resource Plan 2025, Eskom must establish the technical and financial foundation needed for the Board’s decisions regarding its generation fleet’s future.

This includes efforts to decrease emissions from current coal plants, assess coal abatement technologies, repurpose and upgrade power station sites, and clarify Eskom’s strategic role in gas and nuclear energy.

Eskom Green must turn its approved strategy into a reliable project pipeline.

The utility’s planned outreach to potential partners for approximately 2 GW of renewable capacity represents an initial stride in this direction.

Expanding transmission is essential to connect new generation sources and meet the growing demands of various industries.

The shareholders expect Eskom and the National Transmission Company of South Africa to advance an actionable grid program, including Independent Transmission Projects.

This substantial investment should also enhance South African manufacturing, suppliers, and skills development.

Eskom’s growth strategy should extend into the Southern African region, considering regional supply and demand for potential electricity trade and cross-border connections.

Viable projects need to be developed with regional partners and prospective financiers, including the DBSA, IDC, and African Development Bank.

The Minister also highlighted the necessity for a stronger commercial and customer engagement strategy, noting that the mining and industrial sectors are crucial demand sources.

Data centers require a thoughtful strategy regarding reliable supply, suitable locations, network capacity, and long-term agreements.

Customer service should be central to Eskom’s strategy to retain and attract clients, focusing on consistent service, accurate billing, and timely resolution of complaints.

Municipal debt continues to burden electricity supply and network investment.

The department stated it will collaborate with the National Treasury, COGTA, and SALGA to ensure payment discipline and arrangements that foster sustainable supply.

The Minister remarked that “Free Basic Electricity” must reach all eligible households.

He noted that implementing smart metering can enhance customer service while improving revenue collection and distribution network management.

“The shareholders expect the Board to reduce system losses and revenue leakage, maximize value extracted from procurement, maintenance, and project execution, and maintain robust financial controls,” he emphasized.

Eskom should aim for an unqualified audit opinion with no significant findings.

The utility must also expand its use of artificial intelligence, beginning with addressing technical losses, forecasting, and grid management, and gradually incorporating it throughout its broader operations.

“Reliable and affordable electricity promotes investment and job creation while easing household pressures. Eskom is vital in this endeavor,” concluded the Minister.

“The shareholders expect the Board to convert the successes of the recovery program into a sustainable future for the utility and improved service for those who depend on it.”
