From Embo to Miami: South African Film ‘Treasure Hunt’ Makes Its Mark on the International Scene in the U.S.

Durban – It’s a rare moment when a film produced in a small studio in Embo, a quaint township in KwaZulu-Natal, is selected to premiere at one of the globe’s most prestigious film festivals.

This is exactly the case for Treasure Hunt, the debut feature from CAP Studios, set to be showcased at the 2025 American Black Film Festival (ABFF) in June in Miami Beach, Florida.

Set against the beautiful backdrop of the Valley of a Thousand Hills, Treasure Hunt is a narrative brought to life by a community that wholeheartedly contributed to the project. Local residents lent their skills, homes, vehicles, and steadfast support to bring this vision to reality.

A talented ensemble of notable South African actors, including Moopi Mothibeli, Muzi Mthabela, Trevor Gumbi, Zane Meas, and Samukele Mkhezie, generously volunteered their time to help make this dream come true.

The result is a film born from collaboration and passion, now ready to take the global stage.

The story revolves around a reformed ex-convict who stumbles upon a hidden trove of jewelry, only to find himself entangled with criminals eager to reclaim it.

However, beneath the surface of this crime story lies a profound message about choices, redemption, and the potential for second chances.

Written and directed by the talented Chim Onyebilanma, with stunning visuals crafted by acclaimed cinematographer Isaac Alongi, the film illustrates how powerful narratives can spring from even the most unexpected settings and resonate with audiences everywhere.

“This film was born out of a desire to tell meaningful stories from places that are often overlooked,” says Chim, the founder of CAP Studios.

“This represents our studio’s first feature film, and we take pride in demonstrating what can be accomplished when a community rallies behind a common vision.”

Treasure Hunt stands among the few South African films selected for the American Black Film Festival (ABFF), a respected event that celebrates Black talent and serves as a gateway to the Oscars.

Chim, who intends to attend the festival, announced that the film will premiere on Saturday, June 14, 2025, at 8:15 pm at the Miami Beach Convention Center.

Treasure Hunt is about making the right decisions, even in tough times,” adds veteran actor Zane Meas, recognized for his roles in 7de Laan and Isidingo. “I believe audiences are going to enjoy it.”

Produced by Frances Dlongolo, Kike Adeniyi, and Chim Onyebilanma, the film’s success is a testament to the power of local storytelling and the potential that flourishes when talent is nurtured within the community.

CAP Studios is already gearing up for its next project – and if this debut is any indication, the world will be keenly watching.
