Hello, everyone!

Indeed, rules are established, and for those saying “he broke the rules,” I wish you all the best and strength as you move ahead.

It’s always perplexing how certain issues in the horse racing world gain so much attention.

A recent incident in South Africa involved jockey Luyolo Mxothwa, who is now facing severe consequences for what appears to be a minor issue.

With a noteworthy record of approximately 800 wins and eight Group 1 titles, Mxothwa now finds himself under a five-year racing suspension.

So, what was his mistake?

Here it is…

1. Around December 2025 or early January 2026, he sent a voice note to an unnamed individual saying: “I don’t know the horse; if it were one I recognized, I could easily confirm. It’s a newcomer and the competition is weak, but I spoke with the trainer of the other horse, who suggested that Zackey will win. Let’s see how this unfolds. Chat later.”

In the meantime, ‘Zackey,’ also known as Craig Zackey, won the race riding Champagne Problems at 8-13 odds.

On the other hand, Mxothwa competed in that same race, placing sixth with his horse, which had 9-1 odds.

What do you think about this? To me, it seems like Mxothwa was simply sharing his assessment of the race.

His statement essentially was: “I’m not familiar with my horse. It’s a tough race, but the team behind Zackey seems confident. We’ll give it a shot and see what happens.”

Of course, in South Africa, the authorities might view this as ‘insider information.’

But really.

Enforcing rules is one thing; imposing harsh punishments is entirely different.

A simple warning would have sufficed.

But a five-year suspension? That’s outrageous.

It’s not like Mxothwa said: “Zackey’s team believes they will win, and trust me, I will ensure mine doesn’t.”

In fact, his comments suggest the opposite.

And this matter is far from over.

The South African Horseracing Authority has more plans in store for him!

While three of the five years are suspended, he must comply with specific requirements immediately.

The suspended time is contingent on his following seven conditions aimed at preserving racing integrity and aiding investigations into illicit activities.

Among these stipulations is a mandatory disclosure deadline of May 28.

He must provide the NHA Chief Executive Officer with written notification of all relevant information regarding unethical practices in horse racing, including any contact from bookmakers, punters, or others seeking confidential race data.

Notably, the sanction identifies Noor Iqbal and Zahir Ali as individuals believed to be involved in illegal betting activities.

And here’s the intriguing part.

Within 30 days, Mxothwa is required to issue a media statement approved by the NHA, expressing his regret for his actions and urging other jockeys to report any efforts to solicit confidential race information.

The authority has also arranged for him to directly address South African jockeys regarding the seriousness of such illicit practices and the importance of reporting any improper approaches.

All of this action over a message that conveyed very little. Amazing.
