Kaizer Chiefs fought hard to achieve a 2-1 victory against Richards Bay in the Betway Premiership at the Peter Mokaba Stadium on Wednesday, rising to sixth in the league standings.
The Chiefs hosted Bay at one of their alternative home venues in Limpopo, marking their comeback to club action after a three-week international break. Both teams utilized this time to sharpen their skills, as neither had secured a win in their last two league matches.
The match began with an energetic atmosphere as both teams engaged in a lively contest, although the first ten minutes lacked intensity. The Chiefs introduced a new yet relatively reliable midfield duo, featuring Sibongiseni Mthethwa who made his season debut alongside Yusuf Maart.
After 20 minutes of effort, the Amakhosi finally broke through, thanks to the 20-year-old Wandile Duba. A stroke of genius from a well-planned short corner allowed the Chiefs to take the lead, with Yusuf Maart delivering a perfect cross that found Duba unmarked, who skillfully evaded the Bay defense to net his first goal of the season.
This opener balanced the contest, as both teams shared possession as the first half progressed. Despite the early advantage, the game was somewhat disorganized, with neither side effectively controlling the ball or setting the pace.
As the match approached the 40-minute mark with the score still at 1-0, the ball frequently transitioned between both ends, as neither team demonstrated fluidity in their attacking play.
The Chiefs entered halftime with a narrow lead, while the Natal Rich Boys took a moment to devise tactical changes in the locker room.
Just four minutes into the second half, Chiefs right-back Reeve Frosler received a second yellow card and was dismissed, leaving his team a man short early in the half.
In response to the numerical disadvantage, Chiefs coach Nasreddine Nabi aimed to strengthen the defense by substituting Pule Moodi for right-back Dillan Solomons.
A midfield change occurred in the 55th minute, with Thulani Gumede and Siyethemba Sithebe replaced by Langelihle Mhlongo and Nkosikhona Ndaba, aimed at revitalizing a struggling Chiefs defense.
Simultaneously, forward Justice Figuareido was substituted for Simphiwe Mcineka, completing a notable triple change.
Nevertheless, Yanela Mbuthuma managed to rise above the Chiefs’ defense and scored during the additional time added by the referee, beating Brandon Petersen, who was making his first start in goal for the club.
Despite this setback, the Glamour Boys held on to their slim lead, securing three points against a Bay side that struggled to make the most of their numerical advantage for much of the second half.
Now, pressure is mounting on Bay coach Truter, as his squad has only managed one victory in the league this season.
