Mamelodi Sundowns’ head coach Manqoba Mngqithi expressed his disappointment with the team’s performance following a goalless draw against AS Maniema Union during their CAF Champions League opener at Loftus Stadium on Tuesday.
Despite the Brazilians dominating possession and creating multiple scoring chances, they failed to convert any into goals, resulting in a shared point with the Congolese team.
With an impressive 76% possession, Sundowns took 17 shots at goal, five of which were on target, and earned 11 corners during the match. However, they struggled to break through AS Maniema Union’s solid defense, largely thanks to a stellar performance from goalkeeper Brudel Efonge.
Mngqithi acknowledged that the draw stemmed not only from missed opportunities but also from what he perceived as a lack of effort from certain players.
“I have concerns about one or two players who might not have shown enough commitment. The rest of the squad displayed great enthusiasm,” Mngqithi stated.

“I was satisfied with our defensive display; it was exceptional. In midfield, I thought Tebza (Tebogo Mokoena) stood out and performed well against Kitambala (Jephte).”
While the coach appreciated the significant contributions of key players, he was candid about the noticeable lack of intensity from some of the team members.
“There were numerous talented players, but those I feel need to concentrate are the ones I questioned about their effort and intensity since that is often where mistakes happen,” he added.
Sundowns wasted several good chances, including important counterattacks, failing to convert these opportunities into goals. Mngqithi noted that the team’s inability to capitalize on crucial moments was evident throughout the match.
“Nonetheless, I am convinced that the squad that played well showcased their potential,” the coach commented.
“Ultimately, it came down to finishing and not taking advantage of opportunities. We had some promising breakaways, like a two-on-one situation, but we couldn’t even manage a shot. It’s the small details that can be highly frustrating.”
Failing to secure all three points leaves Sundowns in a challenging position within a group that features Moroccan giants FAR Rabat and Raja Casablanca. This is the first time since the 2018/19 season that Sundowns did not win their opening group stage match, having previously lost to Lobi Stars.
While Sundowns struggled to find a win, Rabat emerged at the top of Group B after a 2-0 victory over their compatriots Raja.
