Kaizer Chiefs head coach Nasradine Nabi commended his players for their determination in achieving a victory despite the challenge of playing with 10 men. He also pointed out the marked contrast in quality between his current squad and previous Amakhosi teams.
Chiefs demonstrated a strong resurgence in the Betway Premiership, overcoming Richards Bay 2-1 at Peter Mokaba Stadium on Wednesday, even while a player down in the second half.
Goals from Wandile Duba and Ashley Du Preez shortly after the break secured all three points, propelling Chiefs to sixth in the league standings.
In a post-match interview with SuperSport TV, the Chiefs manager acknowledged that while the victory was celebrated, the overall performance did not meet the club’s elevated standards.
“Winning is not all that matters; the process must be effective. This is Kaizer Chiefs. Our ambitions are high. Mentally, it feels invigorating,” Nabi stated.
Despite netting two goals, the Glamour Boys found it challenging to maintain match control, with limited ball possession.
The Tunisian coach expressed worries about the team’s inconsistency, drawing parallels to legendary players such as Doctor Khumalo and Siphiwe Tshabalala.
“There are encouraging moments in the game, but we need to enhance our consistency. Our performance, particularly in the attacking phase, requires improvement. While gaining three points is vital for the club, playing a half with 10 men poses mental challenges. Although it is gratifying, we must refine our methodology. This is Kaizer Chiefs – remember the benchmarks set by legends like Tshabalala and Doctor Khumalo; that is the target we strive for,” reflected the former Young Africans coach.
In their encounter against the Natal Rich Boys, the Soweto giants registered 18 attempts on goal, with only five finding the target and resulting in two goals.
The team’s challenges in converting scoring opportunities have been a persistent issue for Chiefs since the beginning of the season, causing rising frustration within the squad.
The Chiefs coach acknowledged this ongoing challenge, attributing it to several factors, including a lack of confidence among the forwards, a concern affecting not only Chiefs but the league as a whole.
“This is a major concern for our team, stretching beyond this particular match. Teams are creating numerous opportunities without converting them, possibly due to a lack of confidence or focus among strikers. Regardless, we remain dedicated to enhancing our principles as we move ahead.”
Following a successful home match and with a packed schedule looming after an extended international break, Amakhosi is gearing up for another fixture, this time against a KwaZulu-Natal side, as they host Royal AM this Saturday.
