Kaizer Chiefs’ head coach Nasradine Nabi commended his players for their tenacity in achieving a win despite being down to 10 men. He also pointed out the difference in skill level between his current roster and former Amakhosi lineups.
Chiefs returned to winning ways in the Betway Premiership with a 2-1 victory over Richards Bay at the Peter Mokaba Stadium on Wednesday, even after facing a player shortage in the second half.
Wandile Duba and Ashley Du Preez scored early in the second half, securing all three points and lifting Chiefs to sixth place in the league standings.
In a post-match discussion with SuperSport TV, the Chiefs manager noted that although they celebrated the win, the performance wasn’t up to the high standards expected by the club.
“Winning isn’t everything; the process must be effective. This is Kaizer Chiefs. Our ambitions are high. Mentally, it feels good,” Nabi stated.
Even with two goals scored, the Glamour Boys found it challenging to dominate the match, having limited possession of the ball.
The Tunisian coach expressed his worries about the team’s inconsistency, comparing his players to legendary figures like Doctor Khumalo and Siphiwe Tshabalala.
“There are flashes of brilliance, but we must achieve greater consistency. Our play, particularly in the attacking third, needs enhancement. Although securing three points is vital for the club, performing a half with 10 men is mentally taxing. It feels rewarding, yet our method requires adjustment. This is Kaizer Chiefs – think of the benchmarks set by players like Tshabalala and Doctor Khumalo; that is the caliber we strive for,” reflected the former Young Africans coach.
In their clash against the Natal Rich Boys, the Soweto giants registered 18 attempts on goal, with only five finding the target and two resulting in scores.
The Chiefs have struggled to convert scoring chances since the season began, causing frustration within the team.
The Chiefs coach acknowledged this persistent issue, attributing it to multiple factors, including a lack of confidence among strikers, a challenge that transcends just the Chiefs squad and is noticeable across the league.
“This is certainly a significant concern for our squad, impacting more than this one match. Teams are generating numerous chances without converting them, likely due to strikers’ confidence or concentration. Nonetheless, we remain dedicated to enhancing our principles as we progress.”
After a home victory and gearing up for a busy schedule following an extensive international break, Amakhosi is poised to take on another KwaZulu-Natal side, as they host Royal AM this Saturday.
