Sundowns Disheartened After Maniena’s Victory in CAF Match

Mamelodi Sundowns experienced disappointment following a goalless draw with AS Maniema Union from the Democratic Republic of the Congo in their CAF Champions League opener at Loftus Stadium on Tuesday.

The match commenced with Sundowns controlling possession as expected, while Maniema set up a compact formation to disrupt Sundowns’ central play and capitalize on counterattacks.

Just eight minutes in, the visitors were forced to make an early substitution, bringing Kanu Jonathan on for Mola Otinga due to a muscle injury.

In the 15th minute, Lucas Ribeiro Costa nearly opened the scoring with a long-range shot aimed at surprising Efonge Brudel, but the goalkeeper made a crucial save, conceding only a corner.

Shortly after, Teboho Mokoena took a well-placed free-kick from just outside the box aimed for the top corner, but Efonge was quick to react, blocking the attempt.

Marcelo Allende had the last attempt of the first half, but it was comfortably saved by the keeper, leaving the halftime score at nil-nil.

The home team came out with renewed vigor in the second half, eager to secure the first goal through a series of attacking plays. Allende sent a perfectly weighted ball over the Maniema defense to find Arthur Sales, but Efonge’s quick reflexes thwarted the effort.

In the 62nd minute, the Brazilians wasted a prime opportunity when Ribeiro set up Thapelo Morena inside the penalty area, but his weak shot went straight to the goalkeeper.

Maniema applied pressure with four consecutive corner kicks and nearly caught Sundowns off guard, striking the crossbar with a shot from Moanda Exaucia after Sundowns’ defense faltered in clearing the danger.

As the tension mounted, Mngqithi opted for a double substitution in the 70th minute, introducing Peter Shalulile and Neo Maema for Erwin Saavreda and Kobamelo Kodisang. Costa unleashed another powerful shot from distance, but Efonge tipped it over the bar with the help of the post.

Despite numerous attempts, Sundowns failed to score, marking a disappointing start to their Champions League campaign. This is the first time since the 2018/19 season, when they were defeated 2-1 by Nigerian side Lobu Stars under coach Pitso Mosimane, that Sundowns have not won their opening group stage match.

On that previous occasion, Sundowns regrouped and ultimately finished second behind Wydad Casablanca.

Coach Manqoba Mngqithi, whose team entered this match after a loss in the Carling Knockout Cup final to Magesi FC over the weekend, will be eager to turn their fortunes around in the upcoming five matches.
