Kaizer Chiefs fought hard to secure a 2-1 victory against Richards Bay in the Betway Premiership at Peter Mokaba Stadium on Wednesday, climbing to sixth position in the league table.
The Chiefs welcomed Bay at one of their alternate Limpopo venues, marking their return to competitive action after a three-week international hiatus. Both squads took advantage of this break to hone their skills, having struggled without a win in their last two league outings.
The match commenced with high energy as both teams engaged in a fierce contest, though the urgency was slightly subdued during the first ten minutes. The Chiefs debuted a new yet reliable midfield pairing, featuring Sibongiseni Mthethwa making his season debut alongside Yusuf Maart.
After a thorough 20-minute search for the first goal, the Amakhosi finally took the lead with a goal from 20-year-old Wandile Duba. The breakthrough came from a masterfully executed short corner, with Yusuf Maart delivering a precise cross into the box, allowing the unmarked Duba to skillfully glide past the Bay defense and net his first goal of the season.
This opening goal sparked excitement in the match, with both teams exchanging possession as the first half progressed. Despite taking the lead, the game felt somewhat disordered, with neither side effectively managing the ball or finding a consistent tempo.

As the game neared the 40-minute mark with the score at 1-0, possession frequently shifted from end to end, as neither side demonstrated consistent attacking fluidity.
The Chiefs entered halftime with a narrow advantage, while the Natal Rich Boys regrouped to make their tactical adjustments.
Just four minutes into the second half, Chiefs right-back Reeve Frosler picked up a second yellow card, leaving the team to contend with a numerical disadvantage early in the period.
In light of the setback, Chiefs coach Nasreddine Nabi adjusted the defense by substituting Pule Moodi for right-back Dillan Solomons.
A midfield change occurred in the 55th minute when Thulani Gumede and Siyethemba Sithebe were replaced by Langelihle Mhlongo and Nkosikhona Ndaba, aiming to bolster a struggling Chiefs defense.
Additionally, forward Justice Figuareido was swapped for Simphiwe Mcineka, completing a significant triple substitution.
Unexpectedly, the Chiefs found a second goal in the 64th minute when Maart provided yet another assist, this time to Ashley Du Preez. A well-placed through ball allowed Du Preez to turn excellently before slipping it past goalkeeper Ina Otieno, giving the 10-man Chiefs a crucial cushion.
However, Yanela Mbuthuma managed to penetrate the Chiefs’ defense during stoppage time, getting the better of Brandon Petersen, who was making his first start in goal for the club.
Despite the late goal, the Glamour Boys held onto their slim lead, securing three points against a Bay side that struggled to capitalize on their numerical advantage throughout much of the second half.
The pressure now intensifies on Bay coach Truter, whose squad has managed only one win in the league this season.
